Kanchanjunga Conservation Area
Kanchenjunga Conservation area was established in 1997 and is protected areas in the Himalayas of eastern Nepal. It is located in Taplejung district of Nepal. It covers total 2035 sq.km land of Nepal. The altitude of the conservation area starts from 1200m to 8586m above sea level. The conservation area got its name from the third highest mountain in the world, Mt. Kanchenjunga (8586m) which is the main attraction of this area. The land of Himalayas here is considered sacred and holy. It is rich in natural resources and helps to sustain diverse culture and traditions. Along with Mt. Kanchenjunga other mountains like Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Makalu and Jahnu Himal also surround the area. The forests here are covered with juniper, fir, willow, birch and several species of rhododendron. Rivers, mountains, valleys, lakes, meadow, terrains, etc. makes this area magnificent. It shelters many animals like snow leopard, musk deer, Himalayan black bear, goral, blue sheep, serow, common leopards, etc. and shelters the birds like Impeyan pheasant, red-billed blue magpie, shy drongo, etc. It is prosperous in biodiversity as well as cultural diversity. Local people living here are of a different caste. Limbu is the ethnic group having a large population. Gurung, Rai, Brahmins and Chhetris also live in harmony within the area. It is a great place to explore varieties of cultures and religion. And the people are always ready to welcome with a beautiful smile from their heart. They are very overwhelming and kind. The old monasteries, sites of Hindu pilgrimage, prayers wall surrounding the path reveals the preservations of their cultures. The trekking route is available that crosses the conservation area leading to Kanchenjunga Base camp. But is the restricted trekking region in Nepal. It is categorized as a long trek, and you require a special permit from the government of Nepal. It is the reason that the area is less crowded and is still untouched and unspoiled. Earlier there used to be no places for accommodation. People had to arrange their camping by themselves. But now you can find basic lodges and teahouses around.
